FAQ

How do I contact the Biedenharn Ballpark in West Monroe?
Please call Hank Thurston at 791-9381.

Do I have to take a guided tour or can I go through on my own?
Portions of the Biedenharn Museum & Gardens experience are always guided. Guests are greeted by a first-person interpreter in the Coke Museum, yet guests may tour parts of the Coca-Cola Exhibit on their own. Tour guides will lead guests from the Coke Museum to the Biedenharn Home. The tour of the home is guided. Guests are given the option for a brief guided tour of the garden. Most Bible Museum exhibits are self touring.

What else is there to do in Monroe?
Monroe, Louisiana is an incredible city of 53,000+ which offers almost any cultural opportunity that can be found in major metropolitan areas. Monroe has a zoo, an art museum, aviation museum, African American museum, wildlife refuge and children’s museum. There are two ballet companies, a symphony orchestra, youth and adult theater. The University of Louisiana at Monroe hosts many cultural and arts events.

In addition to the arts, the Monroe/West Monroe area features 936,000 square feet of shopping in Pecanland Mall, the historic Antique Alley and many other shops, Restaurants, a 3/8 mile racetrack, rodeos, golf, hunting, boating and much, much more. Visit our links page or the Monroe/West Monroe Convention & Visitors Bureau website for a full list.

Can you have weddings in the garden?
At the present time, weddings are not allowed at Biedenharn Museum & Gardens.

How many gardeners does it take to maintain the Garden?
Three hard working gardeners keep ELsong Gardens in near pristine order. As our director says, “Details are very important in our garden and that makes the work harder. In a large public garden, a few weeds go virtually unnoticed. But in a small garden like ELsong, a single weed or blemish is easy to spot.”

I heard Thomas and Whitehead in Chattanooga were the first bottlers.
It is a matter of semantics. Benjamin Thomas and Joseph B. Whitehead were the first franchised bottlers of Coca-Cola. They were given rights to bottle Coke by Asa Chandler in 1899 for a reported fee of $1. However Joseph A. Biedenharn was the first person to successfully bottle Coke in his Vicksburg Mississippi confectionary in 1894.

Can I get to the Biedenharn Museum & Gardens by public transportation?
Yes, the Monroe Transit System has a bus stop on Third Street just behind the museum. On Saturday’s the MTS has a trolley that stops directly in front of the museum. The weekend trolley stops at the Masur Museum of Art, the Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum and in West Monroe’s Antique Alley. By the way, the MTS is the longest continuously operating transit system in United States. Visit their website for more information on this important part of Monroe’s history.
