Moonlight in the Garden - Bible Museum Tours - Sept. 20
MOONLIGHT IN THE GARDEN - Bible Museum Tours - Friday, September 20, 2013
September’s Moonlight in the Garden at the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens will feature guided tours of the Bible Museum and Coke Floats in beautiful Elsong Gardens Friday, September 20 from 7 – 10:00 pm. Admission to the event is $5.00 per person. Guests should enter at the Riverside gate near the corner of Riverside and Forsythe in Monroe’s Garden District.
Museum Director Ralph Calhoun will lead tours of the Bible Museum throughout the evening giving in-depth information about the various items exhibited in the museum’s six display areas. Mr. Calhoun’s tour will look at Bibles, Russian Icons, sculpture, classical archaeology and a series of seven modern spiritual paintings. Special emphasis will be given to the Gutenberg and King James Bibles, Russian Icons, and The Dumas Collection of Classical Archaeology which come from the Biedenharn’s museum collection. Additionally, Calhoun will discuss a bronze sculpture of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and life-size statue of Moses which are on loan from the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas.
A highlight of the tour will be discussions of seven large format paintings by Bill Komodore. These modern works depict a number of scriptural themes. Some of the works may elicit emotional responses when first viewed which will change as the artist’s intentions are revealed. Guests will be encouraged to interpret the paintings for themselves, but will also be led to see the issues Komodore felt were important.
Elsong Gardens will also be open during the evening. Visitors are encouraged to stroll the grounds enjoying the sights of the garden as the sun sets and during the dark of night. The garden has an entirely different feel after the sun goes down and many area residents attend Moonlight in the Garden on a regular basis to enjoy this special aspect of nature at night. People are also drawn to this monthly event by the Coke Floats – Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and Coca-Cola - which are part of admission.
Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream is donated by the Creamery.
